Who should go?
The Mercure La Gare offers comfortable and concise accommodation at reasonable rates, while it may lack some of the sumptuous touches one might find at the Sofitel, the hotel does a very good job at providing a more cost effective accommodation choice. An ideal choice for families with up to two children staying for free with parents, the central location also means travelling to and from town is not as issue. When to go?
Hanoi is best experienced during the fall and late spring. The dead of winter can be a little depressing. Likewise, August is a month to avoid Hanoi as the city becomes unbearably hot. We also recommend to avoid visiting the capital during Tet, the local New Year, which takes place in late January or early February. During Tet most restaurants and many tourist sites are close.
