OVERVIEW

The village of Phu Lang is one of the last remaining pottery villages in Northern Vietnam which have been producing ceramics since the 13th century using traditional techniques. Located just over 01-hour's drive from Hanoi and close to the Hanoi - Halong Highway, spend a half day at the village wandering through the workshops and seeing artisans at work.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Phu Lang is a non-commercial pottery village situated at the base of a small chain of hills on the banks of the Cau River in northern Bac Ninh Province. Phu Lang is part of an old pottery village triangle in Northern Vietnam which includes Bat Trang and the village of Tho Ha, which sadly due to industrialization does not produce ceramics anymore.

This village has been making pottery since the 13th century, and around half the residents produces clay pots, decorative tiles, jars and the most lucrative item - burial caskets. Phu Lang pottery is unique and defined by the brown glazed color and specific texture due to the raw clay found in the region.

Departure from your hotel at 0830 for Phu Lang Village to the east of Hanoi, the drive takes over 01-hour. On arrival enter the village and set out on foot through the three hamlets of Thu Cong, Phan Trung and Dong Sai. Wander into any workshop you desire - the locals are friendly and there are many great photo opportunities to be had. In some workshops 'tunnel kilns' can be seen. Some are up to 20-meters long and are heated by wood as this fuel adds to the crafts dimension during the firing process. Continue by vehicle to the workshop of local artisan Vu Huu Nhung, known as Gom Nhung. This young craftsman comes from Phu Lang and is now a respected potter with his wares being sold both in Vietnam and aboard. At the end of the tour return to Hanoi.
