OVERVIEW Learn about the ancient practices of traditional medicine in Myanmar with this guided insider's tour of Yangon. You'll visit a local market where dried herbs and plants are sold, each with their own healing prowess and then sit down with a renowned medicine man who will explain his holistic diagnosis and healing methods.
Your day begins with a visit to Kon Zay Dan Street in downtown Yangon. The market here is filled with stalls selling herbs, plants and even sea shells, all of which are used as medicines in Myanmar. Your guide will help explain the usage of the ingredients. The street is also home to shops selling other goods such as famous tea leaf salad, thanaka- the yellow paste worn by many Burmese- and an array of religious items. After visiting the market transfer to the office of Dr U Shein or Dr Sayagyi U Nyan (note: Visit depends on client's preference and doctor availability). U Shein is well regarded both in Myanmar and abroad for his usage of gold ash powder combined with local herbs to cure diseases. He uses a metal object to detect problems in the patient then concocts a mixture of gold ash and other ingredients for an individual remedy. He will explain to you his methods and provide background on his work and herbal medicines in Myanmar. Dr Sayagyi U Nyan is renowned for his holistic diagnostic method and healing with herbs. He uses a combination of four traditional medicine practices (Alchemy, hot/cold balance, astrology and Ayurvedic concepts) to heal patients and is a proud promoter of Myanmar Traditional medicine. If you wish, Dr Sayagayi U Nyan can perform a health check-up on you by asking a few questions and feeling pulse points. After meeting with the doctor transfer back to your hotel.
