This guided tour of Laos uncovers the beautiful natural environment and landscapes that range from its rivers to mountains and lush forests. Starting close to the Vietnam border at Viengxay, guests are taken on a fascinating tour of the complex network of caves and tunnels that exist underground, constructed to keep local people safe and out of sight during the conflict years of the Vietnam War. Laos was under threat for 9 years from 1964 - 1973 when more than 20,000 people lived in this 'hidden city' below ground level. We take an audio tour that explains the areas history and talk to locals that lived through this period.

Continuing your tour of Laos we head to Xamneua for a Kamu night safari in Ban Son Koua. We take a boat along the Nam Nern River with village guides learning about local land cultivation and spotting native wildlife. Here we also enjoy some delicious local foods cooked by the ethnic village group before heading out in the evening to spot more wild animals and learn about the use of plants in medicine.

From Xamneua we head to Nong Khaiw for a night and then proceed to Luang Prabang the following day. In Luang Prabang we climb the stairs of Mt Phousi and watch the sun set over the city. You will also embark on a guided tour of the city, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Watch the monks collect alms in the early morning and then visit the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls outside Luang Prabang where it's possible to swim in the cool crystal clear water.

Your guide and private car will meet you at the border. After all formalities are completed, drive 3 hours to Viengxay.

Visit the Nam Sam River Promenade followed by a tour of Wat Phoxaysanalam, home to a Buddha statue dating back to 1565. We will also visit a number of weaving houses to see cotton and silk textiles being made by hand.

Overnight in Xamneua

Today we depart for Xamneua to experience a Kamu night safari in Ban Son Koua. Learn about their deep religious beliefs and culture from village guides and boatman who take you on a 1.5hr boat journey upstream. Learn about tracking animals in the forest and with an expert, spot a number of animal species native to the area.

Your guide will take you on a jungle walk, teaching about the use of medicinal plants and explaining the history of the site that was once a major settlement. Try earthen jar wine (lao hai), a local delicacy before continuing your journey with a 4hr drive to the sleepy town of Nong Khaiw.

In the afternoon we drive to Luang Prabang, the spiritual capital of Laos. As today comes to a close, climb the stairs of Mount Phousi and watch the sun set over the city and surrounding hills.

After breakfast take a guided tour of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the afternoon, you will explore the history of Laos, starting at the former Royal Palace and continuing to Wat Mai, a temple renowned for its golden bas-relief.

There is the choice to rise early and witness the monks receive offerings of food from local residents before returning to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast visit the Kuang Si Waterfalls that cascade down a multilevel limestone plateau.

In the morning enjoy free time at leisure to walk around the town or do some last minute shopping. Your guide and private car will meet you at your hotel and transfer you to the airport for your departure flight.
