Kyoto/Osaka - Kinosaki

Take the train to Kinosaki for 2 days of relaxing treats. Stay in a traditional ryokan and enjoy a multi-course kaiseki dinner with late night soaks in an onsen. Choose from a number of onsen to relax in and enjoy walking to some of the surrounding temple buildings. Also in the town is a small but interesting art collection.

Day 1 - Kyoto - Kinosaki (D)

Today is a self-guided day.

This morning take the train to the seaside town of Kinosaki. On arrival at Kinosaki train station, take the shuttle bus to your accommodation or check in your luggage at the train station (it will be delivered to your hotel) and start discovering this quintessential Japanese onsen (hot spa) town on the coast of the Sea of Japan that has preserved its charming atmosphere.

After the walk, check in, pick up your tickets to the spas and change to yukata (Japanese robes) and geta (wooden clogs), and stroll around town along the willow tree-lined small river visiting some of the seven onsens here. The tour of the seven spas is called “Sotoyu Meguri Tour” and is a tradition among visitors to Kinosaki. You will meet many fellow travelers in the streets in yukata and geta with towels on their shoulders. The onsens usually open at 7am and close at 10:30pm. Ask the reception about closing days. If your preferred onsen is closed today, you will have an opportunity to visit it tomorrow.

Enjoy your wonderfully presented, multi-course kaiseki dinner at the traditional ryokan, and maybe a pre-sleep soak at the ryokan’s onsen.

Overnight in Kinosaki

Day 2 - Kinosaki - Kyoto/Osaka (B)

Today is a self-guided day.

After breakfast, or even before, head to an onsen or two for ”asayu” as morning bathing is called in Japanese.

After check-out, you can leave your luggage with reception, and visit Onsenji, a Buddhist temple halfway up the hill at the Western end of town.

The temple was founded in 738 and was the first stop for visitors in the old days to pay their respect before soaking in the beneficial hot spas. There are some temple buildings at the trailhead and it is a 30-40 minutes’ walk uphill to reach the main hall. Alternatively, you can take the ropeway to ”Onsenji”, the first stop. Near the temple’s main hall stands the Kinosaki Art Museum, with its small but interesting collection.

If the weather is nice, you can also take the ropeway all the way up to the observation desk. You will be rewarded by fine views of Kinosaki and the Japan Sea.

Return to Kyoto in the late afternoon.
