PROGRAM DETAILS

This walking food tour starts in Shibamata, a time capsule of Taisho and Showa-period Tokyo and located just near the border of Tokyo and Chiba prefecture. Nested along the Edogawa river, this picturesque town boasts one of Tokyo's most beautiful temples, Taishokuken, with exquisite wood carvings on all four of its outside walls, and lovely enclosed Japanese garden.

After visiting the temple, relax at a traditional tea house with a bowl of green tea freshly prepared by kimono-clad waitresses while we view another stunning Japanese garden.

You will board a nostalgia-tinged boat-trip on the last working one-man ferry boat in Tokyo. Several times an hour, the master slowly poles his fares across the Edogawa river to Chiba and then back again.

The highlight of this walk will be lunch. Your guide will accompany you to eat at the century-old river fish restaurant, Kawajin, along the banks of the Edogawa river. Kawajin specializes in river fish such as ayu or trout and their Japanese-style tatami rooms look out on the sculpted trees and stones of their enclosed traditional garden. Menus change daily and Michael will assist you in ordering exactly the menu you like.
