OVERVIEW On this day-tour you will have the opportunity to tour old Tokyo while adorned in a traditional kimono. Learn about the roots and history of the garment before embarking on a tour of the city on which you will encounter temples, centuries old craft stores selling traditional wear and sites synonymous with Japan. Visit Asaksuka, home to the oldest Geisha district in Tokyo where you will have the opportunity to observe these fascinating social figures.
PROGRAM DETAILS A special experience today as you will get to sightsee in the Asakusa area of Tokyo wearing a traditional Kimono. Consisting of a long, T shaped robe and a sash called an obi which is used to tie the kimono around your waist, kimonos are still worn by Japanese (both men and women) on special occasions, especially weddings.
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel, and you will change into your kimono. The guide will explain to you about the kimono's long and interesting history as she dresses you. After you are dressed, you will make your way to Asakusa by subway. Located, in north-east Tokyo, Asakusa is part of Tokyo's Shitamachi, or old town, and is home to Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple, Sensoji.
The temple's main gate, Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) with its 670kg red paper lantern is an iconic image of Tokyo and the perfect place to pose for a photo in your kimono.
The streets around Sensoji have many traditional shops selling Japanese crafts and souvenirs and are a delight to wander through.
Asakusa is also home to Tokyo's oldest and last remaining geisha district, and if you are lucky you may just see one yourself.
After sightseeing in the area with your local guide, they will assist you with returning to your hotel
