OVERVIEW One of the best ways to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kyoto is by bike while moving at your own pace. Meander through the back streets of this cultural gem and be treated to scenes of everyday life, as you soak up the magnificent architectural and scenic landscape. Cycle through the Miyagawacho and Gion geisha districts, hoping to see a geisha or maiko, a unique scene even by the most seasoned of traveler's standards.
PROGRAM DETAILS Pick up your bike for the day at the bike rental shop, only a 3 minute walk from Kyoto station. Here you will also meet your guide. You will cycle through the Miyagawacho and Gion geisha districts, hoping to see a geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha) as they dash between appointments. Continue along the Shirakawa canal lined with weeping willow trees, past traditional Kyoto style tea houses. Next stop is the Imperial Palace Park, located in central Tokyo. Formerly where the residences of the Imperial family and court nobles once stood, the area was turned into a park after the capital was moved to Tokyo and made open to the general public. With its wide paths and abundant and beautiful green trees and lawns, this park is known as an urban oasis for birds. We then cycle back to Kyoto station along the Kamogawa river, whose riverbanks are popular with locals for strolling. Cherry blossoms bloom along the banks of the river in spring, and in summer restaurants open balconies looking out to the river. If you would like to continue sightseeing in Kyoto on your bike after the tour has finished, we can arrange for you to keep the bike until 19:00 at no extra charge.
