OVERVIEW

Blessed with one of the most distinct cultures on the planet, Japan is home to a number of unique and defining practices. No trip to the country would be complete without taking the opportunity to learn more about these, so join us on this day-trip that will take place in a traditional restored house and learn about the intricacies behind Origami, Calligraphy and the synonymous Japanese tea ceremonies.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Today's cultural immersion takes place in a beautifully restored Japanese wooden town house. You will participate in the following courses:

  • Kimono Wearing - you will have the chance to wear a casual kimono

  • Origami - literally 'folding paper', this Japanese folk art has evolved into a modern art form. You will be using washi, paper made by hand in the traditional manner

  • Calligraphy - learn how to draw kanji (Japanese pictographs)

  • Tea Ceremony - receive a full explanation of Japanese tea and tea ceremony, its long history and relationship with Zen Buddhism.
You will be able to try your hand at making tea, before enjoying your teas master's green tea, accompanied with Japanese sweet.

  • Ikebana - you will also be able to observe an instructor performing the Japanese art of ikebana (flower arrangement). More than just simply putting flowers in a vase, this art form literally 'breathes life' into the flowers.
