Create a shadow puppet with a local craftsman, visit pottery villages where traditional methods are still being used and watch the skilled hands of artisans as they make batiks and wood carvings on this full day crafts tours. You will not only meet friendly artists in the villages around Jogjakarta but also discover the rich traditions of Javanese handicrafts.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Start your handicrafts tour with a visit to Kotagede, a village outside of Jogjakarta, to learn more about Wayang Kulit, an integral part of Javanese culture. These 'shadow puppets' are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks and the shows are a unique form of theater employing the principles of lights and shadows.

In the old city of Kotagede, a village of houses built between 1700 and 1930 whose residents have a long history in traditional craftsmanship. With the guidance of a skilled Wayang Kulit maker, you will create your own leather puppet. They will also show you how to use the puppets and put on a short performance if you wish. The course takes around 3 hours and gives great insight into the history, cultural significance and crafting of this Javanese tradition.  

Midday, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.

Then, continue to Kasongan village, where you will be welcomed warmly by local inhabitants. Situated in a low mountainous area, Kasongan is home to a group of kundis, the local word for potters who make earthenware jugs. You'll visit the showroom and see the ceramic-making process from kneading to shaping, drying and burning.

Your final stop is Krebet, 12km southwest of Jogjakarta, a village of artisans. Walking around the village you will see the traditional production of wooden masks with batik pattern and the carving of small wooden and ethnic statues.

After Kerbet village visit, return to your hotel in Jogjakarta. (L)
