Lush hillsides, unusual temples and antique railways, this Gedong Songo & Ambarawa Railway day trip through central Java introduces you to the history and natural beauty of the region. You’ll visit the 8th century temples of Gedong Songo by horseback, drive through the hills and tour the fascinating railway museum at Ambarawa before capping off the day with a short train ride along the scenic tracks.


PROGRAM DETAILS

Set off from Jogjakarta this morning at 08.00 AM for the 2.5 hour drive to Gedong Songo temples complex. This group of small 8th-century Hindu temples is amongst the oldest in Java and is situated on the hillside of Mount Ungaran. A short ride on horseback, or a longer walk, takes you to the mountain top for spectacular views and a chance to roam among these ancient monuments. 

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant enroute.

Then continue to Ambarawa railway museum located in small town Ambarawa. Established in 1970, the museum preserves antique steam locomotives as well a collection of antique telephones, bells and other instruments used for railway communication.  In addition to touring the museum, you'll take a ride on a mini lorry along the tracks for a 5 kilometer journey.

Return to Jogjakarta late this afternoon. (L)
