DESCRIPTION

As surprising as it would have seemed 20 years ago, Beijing has become a major player in the world’s modern art scene. The centre of the city’s art scene is a collection of artists’ galleries in the 798 art district; however a number of other sites including the nearby Caochangdi are starting to make a name for themselves.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Begin the day with a visit to the ‘Red Gate Gallery’, the first, and still highly influential, modern art gallery which opened in Beijing in 1991. The gallery, located in a watchtower, provides a unique blend of modern and old Beijing.

Your next stop will be the heart of the capital’s art scene: the 798 art district, situated in Dashanzi in the north east of the city. 798 is made up of a number of abandoned factories which were renovated in the 90s by Chinese artists in a style similar to that seen in Berlin. ‘798’ as it is known locally, has become the mouthpiece for Beijing’s most popular contemporary artists. The famous Ai Weiwei had his first exhibitions at 798 and a number of other artists have followed suit. At the time of its opening 798 was noticeably influenced by the Maoist era whilst these days the collection has become much more eclectic. ‘Dashanzi’ as it is known, is becoming increasingly popular.  Here you find an assortment of cafés, restaurants, and specialist boutiques selling a wide range of products ranging from the wares of independent young fashion designers, to housewares and pottery.

Finish the day at the lesser known ‘Caochangdi’ gallery which attracts more ‘underground’ artists. (-)

Optional: You’ll have the chance to meet one of the gallery’s curators who will be able to guide you through the past, present and future of the district.
