OVERVIEW:

Near the town of Kampong Thom, lie the 6th and 7th century temples of Sambor Prei Kuk which are well off the tourist trail and blissfully free of crowds. Spend a day walking or cycling through these magnificent ruins, which are connected by shady dirt paths. Stop for a catered lunch, enjoy the scenic countryside, and visit local craftshops.

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Depart Siem Reap early for Kampong Thom, a small town located between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh along National Road 6 (approximately 2.5 hour drive). The temples of Sambor Prei Kuk are just 28km from the city centre, tucked away deep in the jungle. Dozens of 6th and 7th century ruins fill the area, built in the pre-Angkorian Khmer Kingdom known as Chenla. Many of the prasats, or towers, are in good condition despite the fact that tree roots and vines have grown over the structures. The temples are divided in to three main sections and are interconnected by dirt paths best explored on foot or by bicycle. The tour is accompanied by a guide who will explain the history and religious significance of the buildings. Along the way, stop for lunch- either at the temples or at a picnic spot near the river- and enjoy an ox-cart ride through the countryside. After the temple tour, stop at the Isanborei Craft Hut a community-run shop established to help preserve traditional crafts made of bamboo and rattan. In addition to learning about these crafts, the Hut provides information about the Sambor Prei Kuk temples.

Continue to the Santuk Silk Farm, where you can gain further insight in the process of silk weaving and relax in the garden. Then, continue the drive to Phnom Penh (2.5 hours).

This tour can be done in reverse (Phnom Penh - Siem Reap) or as a day return trip from Siem Reap (2.5 hour drive each direction) as well.

The catered lunch at the temples, ox-cart rides, and local English speaking guides all support the local villagers. Likewise, the stop at Isanborei is a chance to contribute to the local community.
