OVERVIEW: We take you away from the tourist crowds and deep in the jungle on this Siem Reap excursion to climb through temples untouched by time and venture past riverbeds carved centuries ago. Visit Beng Mealea, a jungle-covered temple, where you will likely have the place to yourself to clamor among trees and temple. Continue to Phnom Kulen for a light trek and picnic lunch amid waterfalls, rivers and hidden temples.
PROGRAM DETAILS: This morning head to quiet Beng Mealea, around 65 km from Siem Reap. Enjoy a short walk through the dense jungle and feel like an explorer when you discover the completely overgrown temple. Undiscovered for centuries, Beng Mealea has only recently been made accessible and remains unrestored. It is one of the very few temples that actually give the opportunity to climb through it giving a very 'Indian Jones' feel to the experience.
Continue through seemingly endless rice fields (in the wet season) and friendly local villages to Phnom Kulen, an impressive sandstone plateau in this otherwise flat area. The mountain is considered the birthplace of the Khmer empire and a sacred place for the Khmer who come in droves on the weekends. Upon arrival at the top of Phnom Kulen, Picnic lunch will be prepared as you will discover stone carvings in a riverbed and visit several hidden pagodas. One of the main attractions is a waterfall where you can take a refreshing bath. Enjoy the stunning view of the plains before descending and returning to Siem Reap. (L)
