Yangon - Pyarpon

In May of 2008, Cyclone Nargis made landfall in the Irrawaddy Delta area of Myanmar. Although the region saw vast devastation, the locals have worked ceaselessly to restore their traditional way of life and move forward.

This exclusive tour is designed to give you an insider's look at the restoration efforts which are underway and to meet the resilient locals of this spectacular region. Travel by private car with a knowledgeable Exotissimo guide down to the heart of the delta. Small boat excursions to remote villages and chances to talk to those affected by this tragedy are experiences you will never forget. With a focus on community-based tourism, Exotissimo makes sure that the locals benefit from your visit as much as you do.

Start your tour in Yangon with a short excursion to a nearby village, which was heavily affected by the cyclone. Exotissimo has helped set up a clinic in the area, to help these people get back on their feet. Spend the morning visiting to locals of this area before returning to Yangon for a tour of this beautiful city, filled with tree-lined streets, bustling markets, and the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda.

Drive south to Pyrapon, a small town that will be your base for exploring the delta. During your time in this region, you will visit villages where you can meet and talk with village elders to learn about their unforgettable experiences during Cyclone disaster. Even though they may have lost their property and loved ones, they are remarkably hospitable and welcoming. Genuine smiles greet you amongst the physical devastation, reminding you of the strength of the human spirit.

The experts at Exotissimo Myanmar have gained special permission from the government to bring tourists to the cyclone-ravaged delta. You will travel to villages deep in the delta via private chartered boats, seeing a part of life often discussed but rarely seen.

In the afternoon, cross the Yangon River by local boat, called a sampan, to the village known as Ah Latt Chaung (literally, ‘other side of the Yangon'). There is a dramatic difference in the life of the people in this resettlement village and those across the river in Yangon. Visit a clinic founded with the cooperation and supervision of Exotissimo Myanmar, and meet with locals at a teashop. Cross back to Yangon in the early evening.
