Work is expected
to begin in July on a multi-million dollar project to transform
the area around Kandawgyi Lake into a world-class park featuring
a cable car, walking trails, fountain, boat club, museum and
other recreational and educational facilities. Approval for
the project, initiated in March by the Yangon Division Peace
and Development Council, was approved in early April by Secretary
of the State Peace and Development Council, General Khin Nyunt.
The project area, covering 230 acres, will be developed in four
zones, including upgrades to existing facilities. The design
should be completed in mid-June and the project is expected
to be completed in two years.

SALONE
TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL ON LAMPI ISLAND
Travellers
will have the chance to visit the traditional festival of the
Salones or sea gypsies, nomadic sea-faring people who live in
the Mergui Archipelago and one of the very few truly nomadic people
left in the world. The Ministry of Hotel and Tourism is organising
a visit to Lambi Island where the sea gypsies will celebrate their
traditional festival in the first week of February 2004. The sea
gypsies spend their lives on their boats, and come to live in
temporary villages on the island for only a few months during
the wet season. More details on life of the sea gypsies can be
found in the book Moken, by Jacques Ivanoff (White Lotus Press).
