SALONE TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL ON LAMPI ISLAND

Travellers will have the chance to visit the traditional festival of the Salones or sea gypsies, nomadic sea-faring people who live in the Mergui Archipelago and one of the very few truly nomadic people left in the world. The Ministry of Hotel and Tourism is organising a visit to Lambi Island where the sea gypsies will celebrate their traditional festival in the first week of February 2004. The sea gypsies spend their lives on their boats, and come to live in temporary villages on the island for only a few months during the wet season. More details on life of the sea gypsies can be found in the book Moken, by Jacques Ivanoff (White Lotus Press).
