CAT BA TO BE AWARDED UNESCO STATUS
Haiphong
authorities are fine-tuning a proposal that would see Cat Ba Island’s
national park become an internationally protected reserve under
the watch of UNESCO. The proposal will be submitted to UNESCO
by the end of 2003. The Haiphong Administration of Tourism hopes
that the suggested UNESCO status will attract both tourists and
scientists to the island and help reduce pollution and alleviate
the negative impacts of tourism. Cat Ba Island is 30km off the
coast of Haiphong and is home to many endangered species of flora
and fauna including an endemic species of primate.
