THE BIRTH OF A SYMBOL

Vietnam Airlines

To test its new logo, in 1997 Vietnam Airlines decorated one of its Boeing 767-300s with a Golden Lotus design. The airlines’ decision to adopt a new corporate identity was finalised last October, when a second Boeing was painted with Golden Lotus symbol.

On the 23 July 1997, the corporation’s management board chose the Golden Lotus symbol as Vietnam Airlines’ new logo. The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam issued an official proclamation in support of the logo change on 4 November 2002 The Prime Minister officially approved the new logo in May 2002, signaling the start of a new phase in Vietnam Airlines’ history.

Vietnam Airline’s old logo – a white crane-remains a much loved image to the Vietnamese. However this symbol was plain and old fashioned when compared with other airline’s logos. Since it was first tested, the Golden Lotus symbol struck a strong chord with passengers. For Vietnamese people, the lotus is a symbol of purity, beauty and enlightenment.

By changing its logo, Vietnam Airlines is reaffirming its commitment to continuing to modernise its services and plans. The Golden Lotus is a fitting symbol both for Vietnam and for its flagship carrier. The logo will travel around the world, representing a beautiful country with hospitable people, and a young and dynamic airline.

For a time, both the old and new logos will be used. Planes will be repainted when they undergo routine servicing. Newly bought planes will be painted before delivery to Vietnam Airlines. The entire fleet should feature the new Golden Lotus logo by 2008.  Other equipment will also be repainted as it is serviced and should bear the new logo by 2005.
