Inle Princess Resort to close for renovation

Inle Lake’s Inle Princess Resort has recently added a powerful new generator to guarantee a constant supply of electricity and hot water. The resort will be closed during the coming low-season from 19 May to 30 June for renovation work and staff training. As an alternative during this period we would recommend either the Inle Paradise Resort or Golden Island Cottages.

Cambodias night clubs close

At 18:00 on Friday 23rd November Cambodia’s night clubs, discos, dancing halls and karaoke bars officially closed down. The closure order was imposed by the government following a series of incidents involving knifes or guns in the previous weeks. The closure is not expected to have any adverse effects on tourism as most tourists visiting the kingdom are doing so to learn about the country’s culture and history rather than its nightlife.

Exotissimo introduce Cultural Heritage Tour in Yangon

Following the decision to preserve Yangon’s architectural heritage, Exotissimo have introduced a new Yangon Cultural Heritage Tour. The half-day tour starts in downtown Yangon with a ride on an old Chevrolet bus passing the old railway station and Saint Paul’s Cathedral to Sule Pagoda and then by foot to the Central Fire Station, City Hall, Baptist Church, Myanmar Post & Telecommunications’ office, the classic colonial buildings on Pansodan Street and Strand Road, the Indian Embassy and the Central Post Office. The tour ends with a visit to the famous Strand Hotel for afternoon tea.

Siem Reap bans bike and motorbike rentals

Cambodia no longer allows foreigners to rent motorbikes or bicycles in Siem Reap. According to official sources the action has been taken to protect foreign tourists from potential accidents. Foreign visitors who have not made arrangements in advance now have to either hire a motorbike with driver, which may also be potentially dangerous, or a car with driver to visit the temple sites.

Roads improvements in Siem Reap

Several stretches of road in Siem Reap have been upgraded and improved in recent months including the main airport road, Sivatha Boulevard in town, Highway No 6 eastwards from Siem Reap, the Sisophon road and the road to Poipet on the Thai border.

Danang-Haiphong flights to restart


Vietnam Airlines resumed flights linking the central city of Danang with the northern coastal city of Haiphong on 30th October with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Airbus 320s fly the route, which was suspended in 1997 following the Asian financial crisis.

Heho Airport extends runway


Work has begun to extend the landing strip at the airport at Heho, the gateway to Inle Lake. Because of the work flight schedules to and from Heho will be affected with no flights allowed between 16:00 and 06:00. The work is expected to be finished by February 2002.

Sofitel Royal Angkor extension complete


Siem Reap’s Sofitel Royal Angkor opened its new extension on 1st November. The extension houses an additional 45 deluxe rooms, 12 Junior suites, and 6 executive suites, giving a total of 63 extra rooms. All the new rooms overlook the hotel gardens.
