The Metropole has been a landmark of Hanoi for over a century and following extensive renovations in the early 1990s, visitors today can enjoy the charm of an impeccably restored turn-of-the-century hotel in the heart of the capital.

All 232 rooms and suites, both in the original Metropole wing and the new Opera wing, provide guests with extensive international services and facilities befitting Vietnam's first officially accredited five-star hotel.

The elegant Spices Garden Restaurant offers superb Asian cuisine with a local flavour while Le Beaulieu, a long-time favourite venue for fine dining in the capital, serves up the best of French cuisine and fine wines. Le Club Bar is the perfect venue for drinks and its afternoon chocolate buffet has become a Hanoi tradition.

The Met Pub is unrivalled as the city's most popular bar with live jazz, great food and a well-stocked bar.

Room type:

The Sofitel Metropole commands 232 rooms and suites across its two wings. The Historic Wing is for enthusiasts in search of Hanoi's colonial past. The hardwood floors, faded black and white pictures and four poster beds combine to evoke the grandeur of a bygone age. The Charlie Chaplin Suite here is the biggest and nicest of the hotel. The Opera Wing is for those hipsters who miss their Danish furniture while on the road. Well, not audaciously modern, the rooms here are noticeably brighter, airier and more contemporary than their cousins over in the Historic Wing.

15, Ngo Quyen Street, 10000, Hanoi, Vietnam     Sofitel Metropole Hanoi is located in the heart of Hanoi, 30 minutes drive from Noi Bai International Airport, within walking distance of administrative and handicraft shopping district, Hanoi Opera House and Hoan Kiem Lake.

Who should go?

With past guests like Charlie Chaplin (who they named a suite after) and Kate Moss (who stayed at the Charlie Chaplin Suite), if you are rich, famous and in Hanoi, there really is nowhere else to stay. If you are looking for a chic colonial hotel in the heart of grand Hanoi, the Metropole is for you. If you're looking for a quiet haven from the bustling city, the Intercontinental will certainly suit you best.

When to go?

Hanoi is best experienced during the fall and late spring. The dead of winter can be a little depressing. Likewise, August is a month to avoid Hanoi as the city becomes an oven.

Where is it?

The Sofitel Metropole is in the heart of the city. If you like evening promenades and discovering the city under your own power, the Metropole is perfect for you.

What's not to be missed?

The Metropole is without a doubt one of the best city hotels in Vietnam. Certainly, it is the best in Hanoi and is very proud of this fact. For those who enjoy a rustic colonial atmosphere, a stay in the Classic Wing is in order. Even better, hire out one of the two classic Citroens in front for a city tour in true style.

What's cooking?

The food is good, though nothing particularly exceptional. We worry that with the new Opera wing, the hotel restaurants just don't have the capacity to provide the culinary service that we have come to expect from the Metropole. Breakfast is especially busy.
