When to go?
Although the temperature remains fairly steady throughout the year, Southern Vietnam is marked by two seasons.  The dry season lasts from December to May, while from May to November the rainy season kicks in.  Most of the rain is in the afternoon and only lasts a short time so it is unlikely to disrupt touring plans.  The Chinese new year of Tet is celebrated throughout Vietnam in late January or early February.  During this time, transport options fill up quickly and lots of restaurants and tourist sites are closed so it is not recommended to travel to Vietnam then.
