In contrast to the hectic pace of Tokyo, your next stop is the laid back former capital and seaside town of Kamakura. Visit some of the many ancient temples then continue on to Fuji Hakone National Park and stay in a traditional Hakone Ginyu ryokan that has been built into the side of a mountain. Tour the surrounding national Park in a private car with an expert guide and ride the world's second longest cable ride.
Board the Shinkansen bullet train and head to Japan's cultural capital, Kyoto. Kyoto is home to an astonishing 2000 Shrines and Temples, including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sights. Visit the Kiyomizu Temple located in the atmospheric Higashiyama district then continue to the Heian Shrine, home to Japan's largest torii gate. On your penultimate day, take a walking lecture in the evening through some of Kyoto's famous geisha districts. Head to Kamakura, one of Japan's former capitals and a delightful seaside town. From here we make our way to Fuji Hakone National Park to stay in a traditional Japanese Inn that is built into the side of a mountain, promising stupendous views of the area. The room is purely Japanese in style with tatami mat flooring and comfortable futon beds. Overnight at Hakone Ginyu, Hakone. Day 4 - Hakone/Mt Fuji (B,D)
Tour the surrounding national park with a guide and private car. Enjoy the stunning sculptural exhibition and breathtaking views of the Hakone Air Museum. Impressive indoor galleries, paintings, prints, sculptures and even a Picasso collection is complimented by the stunning mountainside scenery. Ride the world's second longest cable car to the top of Mt Owakudani, the source of Hakone's hot springs. Afterwards, take a boat cruise to Lake Ashino-ko. Overnight at Hakone Ginyu, Hakone. Time for one last soak in an onsen before taking a 2 hour journey on the world famous Shinkansen bullet train to Japan's cultural capital, Kyoto. Spend the day at leisure. We can arrange a private car for your disposal. In the evening, meet Peter Macintosh, a Kyoto resident, a geisha expert and the husband of a former geisha. Embark on a walking lecture through some of Kyoto's districts. After the walk, head to a private bar with an hour of geisha/maiko entertainment, consisting of jovial conversation and dancing. Embark on your private tour of Tokyo with a local guide. Visit Asakusa (part of Tokyo's old town), Meiji Jinja (Tokyo's most famous shrine) and witness a traditional Shinto purification dance and receive a blessing from a Shinto priest.
Start the day with a visit to Nijo Castle before continuing on to Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion. Then you make the 1 hour journey to Nara, Japan's capital in the 8th Century. Visit Todaiji Caste, the world's largest wooden temple as well as other celebrated shrines and monasteries. There's time to wander the soothing confines of Nara Park and greet the many residential deer, who hold divine status.
Transfer to Kansai International Airport. Train tickets and a night's accommodation in Tokyo (if required) are available for those leaving from Tokyo Narita Airport.
