Exotissimo is a strong advocate of responsible travel. We are fully committed to conserving natural resources, protecting local cultural heritage and making positive impacts in the communities with which we come into contact.
Calling Southeast Asia our home, we love to showcase the beauty of our countries through our tours and inspire in guests a genuine interest in the region. We firmly believe in giving back to society and working with local charities to support community development. You can learn more about some of the charities we work with by viewing our 'We Support' pages for Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
We aim to tread as lightly as possible when conducting our tours. Our travel partners adhere to our responsible travel policies and all Exotissimo guides strive to assist travelers in understanding local culture and etiquette. To encourage travelers to act responsibly, all guests on arrival to our destinations will receive an Exo Cares booklet that provides guidelines on cultural and environmental sensitivities.
We have also set up the Exotissimo Foundation, an initiative that raises funds for charitable projects and contributes to the development of sustainable tourism in Southeast Asia.
Exotissimo Foundation
The charitable arm of Exotissimo Travel, Exotissimo Foundation offers financial support to charitable projects and contributes to the development of sustainable tourism in Southeast Asia. Each year a charity is selected as the recipient for the Foundation’s aid.
In 2008, the Exotissimo Foundation donated over 100,000 US dollars to assist the affected communities of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. With these funds, a clinic was built, schools were repaired, humanitarian supplies and agricultural equipment were donated to local villagers. For 2009, we are looking at a variety of organizations in Southeast Asia to which we will direct this year’s funds.
Responsible Travel Guidelines

Exo Cares: As part of our responsibility to protect Southeast Asia's unique natural and cultural heritage, Exotissimo’s Exo Cares booklet is a guide that outlines simple things you can do to have an enjoyable but low-impact trip. All guests to our destinations receive this useful booklet on arrival. Download your copy here, or view it online: French Version : English Version.
Here are some simple guidelines:
- Stay informed. Be familiar with the history, customs and biodiversity of the destination before embarking on the trip. Learn a few phrases in the local language.
- Respect cultural differences. Always seek permission before taking pictures of the locals. Respect local dress standards and dress appropriately.
- Protect the environment. Do not support illegal wildlife trade or purchase items made from endangered species. Do not touch limestone formations or coral reefs underwater.
- Green your stay. Stay in an eco-lodge. Reuse hotel towels and request housekeeping not to change the bed linens everyday. Turn off the lights, fans and air-conditioners when you leave your room. Use water sparingly.
- Waste minimization. Waste should be recycled or properly discarded. When trekking in remote areas, use toilet facilities provided and avoid polluting water sources. Minimize the use of plastic packages and opt for a recyclable shopping bag instead.
- Support the local economy. Buy locally made crafts or products. Bargain fairly, and with a smile. Enjoy local food at local restaurants.
Our Initiatives
Exotissimo is involved in a wide range of community-based projects in Southeast Asia. Some of these include:
- Partnering with the German Cooperation Agency (GTZ), Exotissimo Laos operates the "Akha Experience" tour. Small groups trek through Northern Laos to see the rural villages of the Akha, a struggling ethnic minority group. Proceeds from these tours go directly to the Akha people.
- Exotissimo Cambodia is an active operator along the Mekong Discovery Trail and supports many community-based ecotourism products along the trail.
In the wake of Cyclone Nargis which struck Myanmar in May 2008, Exotissimo Travel Group set up an emergency fund which collected more than 100,000 USD and Exotissimo Myanmar provided relief efforts to affected residents in the Irrawaddy Delta.
- In January 2009, Exotissimo Cambodia donated office equipment to ACODO, a local charity that helps Cambodia’s disabled and orphaned children by equipping them with vocational and life skills.

It’s all about Thailand!! Though hardly I travel to other countries, Thailand is my best destination where I plan to roam around. I love traveling as a backpacker and sometimes just staying in tent or swing is also fine for me. Most of my friends live in the South, so I have a hundred chances to visit them without cost!! Talking about South Thailand, every people mention Phuket but not to me. Have you heard about “Koh Lipe”? It is often called the “Maldives of Thailand”. As not many tourists know, it takes more than twelve hours to reach there. That’s why it is special & keeps this island like a secret treasure!!
Let’s talk about our national animal; cute Elephants!! Have you ever dreamt being Mahout? I love to try once in my life. I am sure you will fall in love with them at first time you see them smile when they take a bath like kids or painting seriously they can. Elephants can do what you never thought before.

Dear Laneya and Lee,
I'm delighted to report that our trip to Burma was just fantastic.
Your hotels, guides, itinerary suggestions and arrangements were truly wonderful. Of course, I fell in love with the gracious people and the traditional culture where religion, superstition and mythology blend into one.
Kenneth was the perfect guide, so erudite, humorous, kind, patient and professional. Everyone just loved him! In addition, he is a gourmand so his restaurant suggestions and menu ordering were first rate; a banquet every day.
Everyone enjoyed the varied experiences but the luxurious Pandaw boat cruise with fascinating village trips and an amazing guide in Mr. "Go To", idyllic Inle Lake and the resort (unbelievably gorgeous) and the hikes to the ethnic minority villages were the definite highlights. Oh, and did I mention the shopping? Wow!
I felt so bad for the people involved in the tourism industry in Burma as very few tourists have come this year, as you know. We all tried to do our best to tip as we went along. Everyone brought supplies and we bought supplies in the market along the way. We also gave money to the local guide in Kentung (charming, enthusiastic and absolutely fabulous with the tribal people) to buy medicines, which we delivered on our hikes.
Given the drama at the Bangkok Airport, it was greatly reassuring to learn in Mandalay that the Yangon Exotissimo office worked on an alternative plan B for us. We really appreciated their efforts.
In conclusion, then, I can truthfully say that all of us have become enthusiastic ambassadors for Burma and will spread the word!
Looking forward to traveling with Exotissimo again!
Best,
Carla

Dear Thuy,
I have been meaning to write and thank you for all your excellent organisation for our trip since our return 2 weeks ago. It contributed to an unforgettable experience filled with so many different but wonderful memories of your country.
Everything went perfectly and we were thrilled with all our accommodation. At the Majestic they upgraded us to their "family suite," which was absolutely magnificent and at the Life Resort we were given "two interconnecting rooms directly overlooking the pool".
I could not help but wonder if our good fortune was because "Exotissimo Travel" had arranged our booking? All transfers went smoothly making our journey worry free.
You were the most organised travel agent and your prompt replies were very much appreciated.
Finally, I must also thank you for looking after our dear friends, the Howards.
Thank you again, Thuy and we hope that the New Year is filled with fun and laughter.
Kind regards,
Barbara
