We were quickly immersed in the unique atmosphere of the hundred year markets in Thailand. Reached on foot or by boat, busy onlookers, old ladies looking for a special medical plant, deliveries of ice cubes bumping into a young teenage girls posing for the I-Phone of her lover, are common scenes in the markets. Imagine the picture filled by old colorful oilcloth sunshade and a softened light, leaving the most peaceful of atmospheres. Step by step, each of our senses were excited and stimulated. How can we speak about Thai culture without mentioning the delicious food? Meandering from one shop to the next, the scent of the local sweets filled the air with a sweet and varied perfume. The stalls, made from wood, offered numerous food types, each one with its own amazing color and taste, with infinite variety on offer. The myriad of multicolor stalls selling their wares creates a labyrinth, bringing you back to a time forgotten by all. Don't be surprised if you stumble across a random find of antique wooden toys or tin robots hidden in the pile of household products on one of these stalls. And not forgetting you will find a huge choice of art decoration objects, clothes and other eclectic goods on sale in this melting-pot of Thai wares. Above all, what is splendid is the mix of the generations. As we walked, we met elderly people seeking for lost memories and young Thais following the current trend for the 60s, sipping an iced coffee on the cool terrace of an old wooden house. This wacky decor is curated by the storekeepers of the weekend. Swapping neon lights for old belt driven ceiling lights, taking the style of the early 19th century, they also displayed cardboard pictures, aged metallic signboards and other posters of Thai cinema from the 60s. Proudly displayed pieces of furniture, each with its own tale, ranging from a one hundred year old bicycle to an art deco armchair, tell a story of a past time. Throughout the market, different generations greet each other, speak together and share invaluable moments. Without knowing it, they are saving a unique heritage. UNESCO was right to list, a few months ago, the Samchuck market, in Saphan Buri province. Chi PHAN - Exotissimo |
