Explore Northern Laos and the Untouched Nam Ha Wildlife

Feb 26th, 2010 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

Northern Laos is a great place for outdoor adventure.  Many make a stop at Luang Namtha before heading off for their outdoor adventures at places like Nam Ha Protected Area or to the surrounding hilltribe villages.

Luang Namtha is a compact and pleasant town.  It is distinctly divided into two sections: the old part of town near the airport and the new town where all the guesthouses and trek companies are located.  Luang Namtha is small enough that both sections can be easily explored by foot.  There are also bicycles and small scooters for rent if you would prefer to discover Luang Namtha on two wheels.

One of the most popular destinations for a memorable Laos adventure is at nearby Nam Ha, Laos’ largest protected area and an ASEAN Heritage Site.  It is over 220,000 hectares and home to unspoiled nature ranging from flat low-lying plains to over 2,000 meter tall highlands.  The flora includes ever-green and semi-green forests, upland broadleaf woodlands, montane forests as well as clear rivers and streams.  The fauna is just as diverse with 37 species of mammals and 288 bird species.

A boat ride from Luang Namtha is a very interesting way to get to Nam Ha.  The trip allows you to see many bird and reptile species in the surrounding jungle.  There are endless possibilities to what you can do once at the protected site.  Along with trekking, you can cool off in small waterfalls, or go wildlife spotting.  Guides, many of whom are from the villages, are wildlife experts and will show how to collect and prepare herbs and vegetables for dinner.  A homestay at one of the villages is another interesting experience as you can interact with the hilltribes and learn about their culture with traditional song and dance performances.

Another option for you is to stay at The Boat Landing Guest House in Luang Namtha.  This eco-lodge provides a positive experience that benefits you and the locals.  The bungalows are constructed in traditional Lao style and made of natural materials while professionally trained employees are hired from nearby villages.  Modern amenities are also provided, ensuring a comfortable stay in Northern Laos.

Explore the best of community-based travel in Laos with the Akha Experience tour, an authentic ecotourism trek jointly developed by Exotissimo and eight Akha villages in the Muang Sing area in Northern Laos.  This three day Laos package is designed for culturally curious travelers with a deep interest in sustainable tourism.

If you are looking for adventure in the serene Northern Laos countryside, why not try Exotissimo’s Splendors of North Laos Biking Tour?  The region is home to a flawless combination of biking trail, natural terrain, hilltribe villages and cultural sites.  Another recommendation is our Authentic Laos Soft Adventure tour.  You will trek deep into the highlands while experiencing ethnic hilltribe culture amidst lush flora and scenic waterfalls.

The Buoyant Mystical Civilization at Inle Lake

Jan 8th, 2010 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

Inle Lake is a shallow fresh water lake located in the Shan Hills, southeast of Mandalay.  It is Myanmar’s second largest lake and home to several interesting places, people and practices.  The calm waters, mist-covered mountains and green floating gardens capture the essence of Myanmar’s natural beauty in one place.

There are many settlements around the lake, the most prominent being the Intha.  They live in stilted bamboo and wooden houses perched above the lake and in perfect harmony with its surroundings.  Mountains form the perfect backdrop as the distinction between heaven and reality is blurred.  The people here are mainly fishermen and subsistence farmers growing their fruit and vegetables on floating farms and gardens.  In order to do this, the Intha gather weeds from the bottom of the lake and bring them back to the desired spot and make them into floating beds which are then anchored by bamboo poles.  These gardens rise and fall with changes in the water level making them resistant to flooding.

Inle Lake is also home to several cottage industries and none as prominent as the area’s splendid silk and cotton weaving.  Inle’s weavers are renowned for their beauty and intricate designs of their handicrafts which consist of its own unique and recognizable style.

Inle Lake is also home to several monasteries.  The most prominent one is Nga Phe Kyaung.  It is oblong in shape, one story high and is raised on eight-foot pillars.  This monastery is famous for its jumping cats.  Monks on break in Nga Phe Kyaungh (also called Jumping Cats Monastery) train the cats to jump through hoops.  One may even find the monks discussing matters such as philosophy and enlightenment while training the cats at the same time!

If there is one aspect of Inle Lake that distinguishes itself from any other place, it would have to be the fishermen and their unique skill.  They are best known for their distinctive boat rowing technique in which they stand on the boat and row with one leg.  One reason could be because the lake is covered by reeds and other floating plants, making it difficult to see when sitting on the boat.  Standing provides the fisherman with a much better view beyond these plants.

There are other activities and sites to see in the area as well.  The lake has some hot springs on its northwestern shore, which can result in a relaxing afternoon resting spot.  The area surrounding the lake makes for memorable adventures, with great hiking trails and biking paths.  You may also come across animal species found nowhere else in the world, as Inle Lake is home to many endemic animals including over twenty snail and six fish species.

You can discover the beauty of Inle Lake along with the rest of Myanmar with Exotissimo’s Essential Myanmar tour.  Unveil the mysteries of Myanmar as you explore the country’s glittering temples and pagodas as well as the country’s peaceful countryside.  You can also lend a helping hand to the residents of Inle Lake by joining our one day House Building on Inle Lake Day Trip tour.  Help build a house for a family and spend time with children at a local school in this one day trip that is sure to make a difference for many in the area.  You can also see our recommended Myanmar tours page for other memorable trips into this mysterious yet wonderful country.

A Dolphin Is A Fish, Right?

Oct 12th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

The Irrawaddy River flows through Myanmar, practically dividing the country in half. The river and the surrounding area boasts some of the most beautiful scenes of Myanmar, with stunning landscapes, quiet villages, and an array of interesting animals.

One of these animals is the Irrawaddy Dolphin sometimes called the Irrawaddy River Dolphin. Many think that these aquatic mammals are river dolphins. There is only some truth in that, as they are actually oceanic dolphins who come by the river mouth because of the high salinity there. The dolphin are named after the river itself, but the animal’s range is quite vast stretching into the Gulf of Thailand, the Mekong River, and into Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and northern Australia.

They hold a very special relationship with the fishermen in Myanmar because they actually round up the fish and drive them towards the fishermen’s nets. However, humans are also responsible for the animals being on the endangered list. Many of these dolphins get accidentally caught in gillnets and trawls which lead to the dolphin’s death. Due to the helpful nature of the dolphins, many fishermen are sad for the dolphins’ fate, but have no choice as they cannot abandon their livelihood. Many are also caught and trained for aquariums while others die as a result of illegal blast fishing.

This is very sad news for these cute aquatic creatures. Their rarity can often make a pleasurable experience for you if you happen to cruise down the Irrawaddy River or are floating along the Mekong Delta. You can contact Exotissimo and enquire about tours to these areas where you will discover the cultural and natural beauty of the area and a chance to catch a glimpse of this adorable mammal.

an-adventure-for-every-traveler

A soft adventure tour is a good way to gain deeper insights into the local culture and natural beauty. These activities expose curious travelers to new experiences, environments and cultures with a lower exertion level as compared to traditional ‘hard’ adventures. It is not about attaining high adrenaline and excitement levels, but rather taking one’s time to see, understand and savor the local sights and sounds.

Treks into national parks with local naturalist guides showcase the incredible array of indigenous flora and fauna. Venture into hidden spots or the rural outskirts to uncover the local lifestyles. Rough it with a touch of comfort with deluxe camping in Myanmar’s northern town of Putao, the Golden Triangle in Northern Thailand or within the grounds of an ancient Angkorian temple. The opportunities for discovery are boundless and so are the rewards!
