Incredible Insight into Isaan

Nov 30th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

When you think of Thailand, what comes to mind?  Southern beaches and islands may be a thought.  Beautiful palaces and pagodas might also spring up as well as the warm Thai smiles.  Even the spicy and tasty food might come to mind.  However, one aspect that usually gets overlooked but still encompasses an important element to the kingdom is the Isaan region.

Isaan is the north eastern part of Thailand.  The region consists of 19 of the country’s 76 provinces and is bordered by the Mekong River and Laos to the north and east and by Cambodia to the southeast.  The term Isaan is a Sanskrit word adopted in the 20th century which literally means ‘northeast direction’.  The people in the region speak a unique dialect which closely resembles the Lao language more than the Thai.  However, most people do speak the central Thai language as their second tongue and for those who cannot speak it, they can at least understand the central language.

Isaan is a region that features many plateaus and mountain ranges.  The Korat Plateau covers most of the region, with the Petchabun Mountain range constituting the most of the region’s west.  Because of the abundance of wildlife and flora, there are several protected parks in the area, with the most well known being Khao Yai National Park.

khao-yai-3

The region is also known for its unique culture.  Mor Lam is the traditional folk music and song from Isaan.  Lyrics in Mor Lam usually feature a theme of unrequited love or the difficulties of rural life delivered with wry wit and humor.  The lyrics are delivered in an almost conversational style, similar to rap music and are usually accompanied by a traditional Lao instrument called the Khene (a free reed mouth organ).

The food in Isaan is also unique compared to the rest of the country which actually resembles Lao cuisine.  Sticky rice is the main staple of Isaan food with the Larb (a type of Lao meat salad) and Som Tum (papaya salad) also being unique to the region and readily enjoyed by the rest of the country.

Isaan’s past is also closely related to Lao history.  After the decline of the Khmer empire, the region was then influenced by the Lao Lan Xang Kingdom from the 13th century.  During this time, many Thais and Lao started to migrate and settle in the area.  By the 17th century, the region was heavily influenced by the kingdom of Siam.  During the 20th century, Thailand tried to unite all of its regions through a policy known as ‘Thaification’.  The policy attempted to integrate the region as an integral part of Thailand and distance its history and roots away from Lao’s.  During this time, the people of Isaan were also starting to study the Thai alphabet and the written script eventually replaced the Lao alphabet.

Isaan’s unique geography, history and culture present a great travel opportunity for you.  The region is the most laid back there is (probably stemming from the Lao background of the people) and offers the traveler a different side of Thai life (aside from the beaches and big cities of Thailand).  On our Isaan Insight tour, you will explore the area’s vast plateau lands, ancient Khmer structures and Isaan’s kind hearted people.  If you would like to spend the majority of your time at Khao Yai National Park, then our Bangkok and Khao Yai in Comfort tour is our suggested tour for you. You can also see Exotissimo’s recommended Thailand tours collection for a chance to extend you time in Isaan with another tour.  As you travel around in Thailand, there is a very good chance you will meet an Isaan person.  Many come to Bangkok and other parts of Thailand looking for work and would very much like to have a friendly chat with you to practice their English and learn about your country.

Beauty and Grace Personified with Khmer Classical Dance

Nov 26th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

Khmer classical dance is dance form from Cambodia known by various names in English, such as Khmer royal ballet and Cambodian court dance.  One cannot witness classical Cambodian dance without praising the beauty, skill and precision of the performers.

Khmer classical dance is a highly stylized art form performed mainly by women in front of royal palace courts.  The dance is also showcased in several types of Khmer theater such as such as Lkhaon Kbach Boran (the main genre of classical dance drama performed by women) and Lkhaon Khaol (a genre of dance drama performed by men).  Many westerners consider Khmer classical dancers as Apsara dancers, however this phrase would be considered incorrect because the Apsara (supernatural and beautiful female spirit of the clouds and waters) is just one of the characters depicted in the performance.

There were records of classical Khmer dances being performed as early as the 7th century.  The dances were used as funeral rites for kings and the prestigious, a practice which continues today.  Performances usually took place at temples and the dancers were considered messengers to the divine.  The art hit an uncertain period during the Khmer Rouge regime, with many dancers killed because classical dance was thought as of an aristocratic institution.  After the fall of the Khmer Rouge, the remaining dancers came out of hiding and sought to revive this art form.  Dance schools and universities re-taught this beautiful dance and it is now alive and well.

Khmer classical dancers uses highly stylized hand movements and gestures to depict a story, similar to a mime.  Speaking and singing parts are rare, instead a beautiful smile is worn throughout the dance.  In order to be a flawless dancer, participants must undergo years of training and stretching so they can have flexible limbs.  Dances are accompanied by a classical music orchestra called pinpeat.  Instruments in this orchestra include xylophones, drums, oboes and gongs.  When the music is not playing, a chorus of singers will depict the story of the performance.

Most Khmer dance performances consist of four main character types.  They are Neay Rong (men), Neang (maidens), Yeak (ogres or yaksha) and Sva (monkeys).  Other roles include deer, mermaids, hermits and the mythical Garuda and Kinnaris.  Most of these characters (men included) are performed primarily by women.  Monkey roles, however are performed by men because the role usually includes acrobatics such as cartwheels.  Hermit characters are also usually danced by male performers.

Khmer classical dances are a marvel to watch.  It is beautiful art form that takes years of dedication to perfect.  It is a relief that the art form still exists today, considering the past the country went through before.  See Exotissimo’s Cambodia tours collection or contact us for exciting trips into the wonderful country and opportunities to watch this beautiful art form.

Experience Vietnam’s Largest Island; Phu Quoc

Nov 25th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

Vietnam is a vast and interesting country to visit with fascinating cultures, monuments and people.  After experiencing the best of Vietnam on the mainland, why not relax at Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s main island?

Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam, located in the Gulf of Thailand, 45 kilometers west of Han Tien on the Vietnamese mainland and 15 kilometers off the Cambodian coast.  It is sometimes called the Emerald Island because of its triangular shape and its 99 mountains.  The district of Phu Quoc includes the island and the surrounding islets.

It is a mountainous and densely forested island which presents many day trip opportunities.  For one, you can snorkel off the island’s coast.  If you are the adventurous type, you can rent a 4×4 jeep and venture through the jungles and mountains of Phu Quoc.  Or, if you like, you can rent a scooter and explore the island on two wheels.  Be warned though Phu Quoc has its shares of potholes so be very careful when navigating your way around the island.

Long Beach is the biggest beach on the island, situated on the western end of Phu Quoc.  It stretches 5 kilometers and is home to most of the island’s hotels and resorts.  On the east side lie some smaller but equally relaxing beaches such as Bai Dan and Bai Sao.

You must also try the famous fish sauce and pepper.  The shores of the island provide the anchovies needed to make the sauce.  Pepper cultivation in the center of the island supplies the fruit necessary for the island’s famed black pepper.  The island is also known for its unique breed of dog.  The Phu Quoc Ridgeback Dog is one of the world’s rarest dogs and are easily distinguished by the spiraling fur on their backs.

A trip to Phu Quoc is a great way to cap off a tour through Vietnam.  Relax in this up and coming tropical island with Exotissimo’s Phu Quoc Beach Break tour.  See our suggested Vietnam tours to plan your first days in the country.

Nov 24th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

Thailand is famous for beach getaways.  The country is home to dozens of beaches and islands and draws thousands of tourists to these destinations each year.  Each beach has its own character, ensuring you will get a different type of beach vacation.  For a quiet and tranquil beach getaway, why not try Koh Lipe?

Koh Lipe (pronounced Koh Lee Pae) is an island off the coast of Satun Province in Southern Thailand, near the Malaysian border on the Andaman Sea.  It boasts some of the clearest ocean waters, coral reefs and marine life in the area.  It is a small island and can easily be explored by foot.

There are four main beaches on Koh Lipe.  They are Pattaya Beach in the south, Sunrise Beach on the east, Sunset Beach in the west and Karma Beach in the north.  Pattaya Beach (not to be confused with Pattaya Beach on the country’s mainland) is the most popular one with more resorts than the other beaches and a small Chao Ley (sea gypsy) village.  There are also nice quiet bars on the beach where you can enjoy the pristine environment with a cold drink and restaurants within walking distance of each other.

Koh Lipe offers some exceptional snorkeling and dive excursions.  One estimate has it that 25% of the world’s tropical fish species reside in these waters.  The island is rapidly growing but there are still not that many tourists on the island, so you can expect a peaceful and unspoiled snorkeling and diving experience.

Koh Lipe is also a great headquarters for island hopping.  Tarutao National Marine Park consists of many beautiful islands such as Koh Rawi, Koh Adang and Hin Ngam and are all easily reached from Koh Lipe.  All these islands, including Koh Lipe are scenic and are great for island enthusiasts or green minded travelers.

Exotissimo has a specially crafted tour dedicated to the island.  Beach Escapes at Koh Lipe will ensure you of a quiet beach getaway where snorkeling, diving and relaxation in a rustic island atmosphere awaits you.  You can also see Exotissimo’s recommended Thailand tours page for other relaxing trips in this amazing country.

Visit Spirits on Mount Popa in Myanmar

Nov 23rd, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

Mount Popa is a volcano in central Myanmar about 50 kilometers south-east of Bagan and rising over 1500 meters above sea level.  The crater of the volcano is over a kilometer and a half in diameter.  Scientists believe the volcano to be extinct, with the last known eruption, according to legend occurred in 442 BC.  The mountain is best known for the neighboring Popa Taung Kalat monastery where statues of 37 spirits reside.

Scholars believe the name Popa could have been derived from the ancient Pali word popa, which means flower.  The area is a haven for nature with trees, flowers, plants and other vegetation covering the mountain.  However, the word Popa could also come from another Pali word.  Pubba, which means east. This word could have been originally used to describe the mountain easterly location from Bagan.

Mount Popa is the residence of Myanmar’s most powerful spirits (nats), similar to Mount Olympus being the home of the gods in Greece.  The nats themselves were once human beings who have died violently.  Some of the nats include Thagya Min (considered king of the nats), Min Mahagiri (a son of a blacksmith who was strong and considered a threat to the throne and eventually burned alive), Mintara, the king of Innwa (who saw a fairy, went insane when the fairy disappeared and was murdered by one of his followers) and Shindaw (a young novice monk who died of a snakebite).

The site around Mount Popa consists of two attractions.  One is the actual volcano itself which is Mount Popa (usually called Taung Ma-gyi locally) and the nearby Popa Taung Kalat hill, where the monastery for the nats reside.

Mount Popa and  Popa Taung Kalat hill, are regularly visited by pilgrims who pay their respects to the 37 spirits.  The main expidetions to the monastery occur twice a year, one in summer in accordance with the full moon of Nayon (either in May or June) and once more in winter during the Nadaw full moon (either in November or December).

Climbing up Taung Kalat will offer some incredible experiences.  On your way to the top, you will meet some wild Macaques.  If you happen to drop anything, the best advice is to let the monkeys keep it.  They are quick and are relentless in getting what they want.  After all, they are wild animals.  Once you reach the top, be prepared to witness a scenic view of the land below.

Mount Popa and Popa Taung Kalat are full of history, legends and natural beauty.  Exotissimo can take you on this epic journey with our Mount Popa and Salay Tour – Bagan.  This one day tour will enlighten you about the nats and their roles in Burmese lives.

Myanmar is a fascinating country and one of the least visited by tourists in Southeast Asia.  You can always see Exotissimo’s recommended Myanmar tours for other exciting escapades in this charming and varied country in Southeast Asia.

A Kengtung Hiking Adventure

Nov 20th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

If you like hiking, adventure and a taste of hilltribe life in Myanmar, then you should try Kengtung.  The town is surrounded by mountains and is an exotic blend of Shan, Burmese, Thai and Chinese influences.  It is near the Golden Triangle in Myanmar’s Shan State and is at an average elevation of more than 1500 meters.

The town was founded by the grandson of the first king of Chiang Mai and the Lanna Kingdom, King Mangrai.  The expansion of the Lanna Lingdom has resulted in the migration of the Tai people into the area.  The town now boasts a colorful array of ethnic groups which include the Akha, Ann, Wa, Palaung, Lah and Shan.

The town of Kengtung also boasts some striking sites for visitors to see.  There are a group of 19th century temples and structures in the center of town such as Maha Myat Muni pagoda (Shan/Thai: Wat Phra Jao Lung) and Zom Kham temple (Shan/Thai: Wat Jom Kham).  Most sites in Kengtung have two names because of the cultural influences of the Shan and Thai languages.  Sitting above the town on a hill, Wat Phra That Jom Mon is a good place for a view of the town.  A visit to a nearby hot spring is also a must.

With the terrain and interesting mix of culture and life, trekking is a great way to experience Kengtung and the neighboring area.  You will come across welcoming and friendly tribes in their interesting costumes and markets that still operate on barter trade.  In these markets, the various hilltribes converge for a sea of interesting colors and atmosphere.  Exotissimo has two packages into the area with our multi-country Crossing to Myanmar: Chiang Mai to Kengtung tour and Kengtung Adventure tours.  A hiking adventure into the region is certain to reward you with captivating insights into the town, the surrounding locale and its authentic hilltribe cultures.

A Cruise on the Emeraude

Nov 19th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

If you are ever planning a trip to Vietnam, a stop to Halong Bay is a must. It is a beautiful area filled with limestone islands that rise up from the clear emerald waters. Exotissimo has an excellent tour of Halong Bay aboard the Emeraude.

The Emeraude is a replica of an early 20th century steam ship used for cruises along Halong Bay. It went into service in 2003 and retains all the features, charm and atmosphere of the steamer during the early 1900’s. The ship was part of a fleet the Roque brothers built when they left their native Bordeaux in 1858. The brothers went to Vietnam looking for adventure and fortune and found both, despite their share of ups and downs. They had a successful trading and timber business, almost went bankrupt and was even taken hostage by pirates. Eventually, the brothers built the Emeraude along with four other steamers to cruise passengers along Halong Bay.

The ship houses over 30 luxury cabins and suites. Polished wooden floors and brass fittings make up the elegant and comfortable rooms. The ship also includes a café, a restaurant, a foot massage service and tai chi sessions on the sundeck in the morning, all while taking in the marvelous scenes of Halong Bay on a steady 10 nautical knot cruise.

Explore Halong Bay in style with Exotissimo on board the Emeraude with our one night Emeraude Experience on Halong Bay tour or a one day Emeraude Cruise – Halong Bay package. A visit to Halong Bay is a great way to start or finish up a Vietnam tour, so you can always peruse Exotissimo’s Vietnam tour page for a memorable experience in the country.

The Sights, Sounds and Smells of Chinatown, Bangkok

Nov 18th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

For a truly unique multicultural experience, a day spent in Chinatown, Bangkok is a must try. The streets are filled with ethnic Chinese people and large neon signs, reminiscent of a city in China. It is also a great place to shop for just about anything.

Chinatown covers most of Yaowarat Road and portions of neighboring roads such as Charoen Krung in one of the oldest sections of Bangkok. Yaowarat Road itself is said to emulate a dragon’s curvy body thus making the road a great business center for Chinese (dragons are a symbol of luck). However, Chinatown was not always on Yaowarat Road.

Chinese merchants came south to trade with Thailand (called Siam at the time) during the 1700’s and eventually settled on an area in what is now the Grand Palace complex. King Rama 1 wanted to move the Thai capital to the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River and into the area occupied by the Chinese at that time. This forced them to move two kilometers down river into modern day Yaowarat.

The atmosphere in Chinatown is frantic. There are shops all over the streets selling items ranging from gold, textiles, electronics, jewelry and food. There is also the rare Stone Museum and numerous temples and shrines in the area.

Chinatown is easily accessible by Bangkok’s MRT subway system. Just ride the train to the end of the line at Hualumphong Station and it is an easy walk from there.

Biking along Chinatown’s vibrant streets is an experience in itself. Exotissimo can arrange a day trip for you with our Biking Chinatown and Foot Massage tour. You can also peruse our Thailand Day Trip collection for other one day excursions in Bangkok or in other areas and see our Thailand Tour page for multi-day packages in this beautiful country.

History of the Khmer Empire

Nov 17th, 2009 by Exotissimo | Comments: 0

The Khmer Empire was one of the world’s greatest kingdoms.  Its territories stretched into what is now modern day Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Malaysia.  The empire’s greatest legacy is Angkor, where the great ruins of Angkor Wat and other monuments currently stand.  Satellite images of Angkor have proven that the area was the largest pre-industrialized urban center in the world, even bigger than the area of modern day New York.

The birth of the empire was estimated to be in 802 AD.  There were some factors that led to the rise of the Khmer Empire.  First, location played a major role.  Angkor, the seat of the Khmer Empire, was located just north of the Tonle Sap, south of the Kulen Hills and protected by thick jungle on all sides.  This made invasion difficult because the only way to bring an army to attack Angkor was to sail upstream from the Mekong River.  There were also no paved roads at the time so if armies wanted to invade, they would have to set up long and vulnerable supply lines.

Second, the adoption of the Indian concept of ‘god-king’ allowed the Khmer kings to rule with absolute power.  This enabled the kings to mobilize troops and manpower for expansion and protection.  The kings were also surrounded by vastly learned Bhramins, who were educators, priests and scholars.  The knowledge Bhramins have are secret and only passed down from father to son.  This gave the kings private but vital information on how to run an efficient empire.

Third, the control over water resources contributed to the rise of the empire.  The area faced two extreme seasons, the monsoon and dry.  During the monsoon season, floods were prevented because of the numerous large ponds and reservoirs in the area, protecting farms during the rainy season and conserving water during the dry.  The empire also had an efficient irrigation system that led the Khmers to grow crops throughout the year, which led to high productivity and a strong economy.

cam-angkor-wat-exterior-5

Like all great empires, the Khmer eventually fell.  There were some important factors leading to the fall of the empire.  First, the introduction to Theravada Buddhism played a big role.  The core belief system of the Khmers before was Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism, which had no say against the concept of ‘god-king’.  However, Theravada Buddhism challenged this concept because it taught people to seek self-enlightenment, abandon materials and to discourage any superstitious beliefs.

The introduction of Theravada Buddhism directly led to the people not committing themselves wholeheartedly to the king.  The irrigation system was then not as efficient so the empire’s productivity and economy diminished greatly.

The diminished productivity of the irrigation system was also partly due to allocating manpower to empire protection.  Neighboring city states were becoming more powerful, especially Ayutthaya, so the Khmer empire had to assign forces to the west, thus diminishing maintenance of the irrigation system.

Finally, roads that served the empire also served its downfall.  As the empire grew, roads were eventually built so to make trade easier.  The empire was also becoming weaker at this time from the reasons mentioned before, and other empires, such as Ayutthaya took advantage of that and used the roads to invade Angkor in 1431.

The evidence of the Khmer Empire’s greatness is still available for all to see today.  Let Exotissimo take you on a virtual history tour with our Angkor Discover package and see for yourself the marvels of Angkor and its prized asset, Angkor Wat.  You can also see what we have in our Cambodia tour section for other exciting options during your stay in Kampuchea.
