Pakse - Picturesque Perfect
Nestled at the confluence of the mighty Mekong and Se Don rivers, the provincial capital of Pakse is one of most beguiling and unexplored of Laos’ small towns. Home to beautiful wats and two gorgeous rivers, the town has a definitive charm and is a great spot to explore and enjoy fine food and excellent local hospitality.
Pakse is the proud home of one of Asia’s great but least visited temples, Wat Phu, which was built by the founder of the first Khmer empire. The province also houses much of the Bolaven Plateau, an area that is home to a large number of diverse ethnic minorities. To the south of Pakse are the beautiful flood plains of Si Pan Don, or ‘Four Thousand Islands’.
Although still a relatively untouristed destination, the Lao government has begun cultivating new, ecologically friendly and well-regulated tourist destinations in the province, and there are a multitude of interesting day trips that can be made from the sleepy town combining the adventure of the unknown with reliable and regular service.
Although who knows, Pakse is so beguiling you may be tempted to just stay in town, relax with riverside drinks and watch the sun smolder into the horizon..
