Essential
Myanmar holidays and travel information
Myanmar
(formerly known as Burma) offers many sites of scenic and historical
interest for the traveller to this country. The capital Yangon (formally
called Rangoon) still displays much of its colonial era architecture
and in the centre of the city is Sule Paya, a pagoda which is more
than 2,000 years old. The Shwedagon Pagoda is the most sacred Buddhist
pagoda for the Burmese and is covered by thousands of gold plates,
diamonds and other semi-precious stones.
A
short drive to the east of the once Royal Capital, Mandalay, is
the former British hill station of Maymyo, now called Pyin Oo Lwin.
Many reminders of the colonial era are still present in Pyin Oo
Lwin, including brick and timber houses with British names and the
botanical gardens to the south of town. Another former British hill
resort is Kalaw, 200km south of Mandalay in Shan State. Kalaw is
a little higher than Pyin Oo Lwin at 1,320m and has a similar faded
colonial atmosphere. Kalaw with its cool mountain air and pine forests
offers some very good trekking possibilities. The road from Kalaw
to Pindaya is very scenic with panoramic mountain views, reminiscent
in places of the Alps.
Pindaya
is famous for its caves carved out of a limestone ridge overlooking
a lake. The caves contain over 8,000 gold-covered Buddha images
as well as some spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. To the
south east of Pindaya is Inle Lake, 1,328m above sea level and 22km
from north to south. Inle Lake is home to the Intha people and is
famous for its unique leg-rowing fishermen and floating villages
and gardens. A tour of the lake in a local wooden canoe visits the
Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, one of the most important religious sites
in Myanmar, dating from the 18th century.
The
monastery of Nga Phe Kyaung is built entirely of teak and is famous
for its unusual displays by hoop-jumping cats. The villages of the
local Intha and Pa-O people are built on stilts on the lake and
there are many interesting cottage industries to visit include cloth
weavers and cheroot makers.
To
the east of Yangon in Mon State is one of Myanmar's most important
places of pilgrimage for Buddhists, the magnificent "Golden Rock"
at Kyaiktiyo. A huge boulder covered in gold leaf and said to contain
a hair of Buddha is perched on a cliff at the peak of Kyaiktiyo
Mountain. Other areas to consider visiting include the beaches at
Ngapali on the Bay of Bengal in the west of the country and Mogok,
in the gem mining region of the north.
