Essential
Laos holidays and travel information
Laos
is the forgotten country of South East Asia. In former times the
country was called Lane Xang or the Land of a Million Elephants
and even today elephants can still be found living wild as well
as working in its great forests. Laos is a country where visitors
can really escape from the stresses of modern life and step back
into the calm of a world dominated by Buddhism.
Vientiane,
the sleepy capital of Laos, is a city of dusty streets and Buddhist
temples or wats. The country's holiest site, That Luang, can be
found here as can the beautiful Wat Sisaket with its cloisters containing
thousands of miniature Buddha statues. Other places of interest
in Vientiane include Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Simoung and Vientiane's
own Arc de Triomphe, the Patouxai Monument.
About
500km south east of Vientiane is the important river port and market
town of Savannakhet and further south still near where the borders
of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos meet is Pakse. Pakse is a strategically
located commercial centre and also the starting point for exploring
the ancient Royal capital of Champassak, where the ruins of the
7th century Wat Phou are to be found.
The
real highlight for most visitors to Laos however is another of the
Royal capitals, the former mountain kingdom of Luang Prabang. Designated
as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Luang Prabang had over
65 wats in the 18th century, 30 of which still survive intact today.
There is little traffic on the streets of Luang Prabang and monks
in orange robes scurry in all directions carrying black umbrellas
to shade themselves from the sun. The Royal Palace, now the National
Museum, Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Sen, Wat Visun and Mount Phousi with
panoramic views over the city should not be missed.
An
interesting day trip from Luang Prabang is a journey by boat on
the Mekong River to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. The caves carved
out of a towering limestone cliff are crammed full of thousands
of gold lacquered Buddha statues. Another of the mysteries of Laos
is the Plain of Jars south east of Luang Prabang where 300 enormous
ancient stone jars litter the landscape.
