In former times the country was called Lane Xang or the Land of a Million Elephants and even today elephants can still be found living wild as well as working in its great forests. There is little traffic on the streets of Luang Prabang and monks in orange robes scurry in all directions carrying black umbrellas to shade themselves from the sun. The Royal Palace, now the National Museum, Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Sen, Wat Visun and Mount Phousi with panoramic views over the city should not be missed.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" color="#95B7C4" size="2">An interesting day trip from Luang Prabang is a journey by boat on the Mekong River to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves.
